Story

who are we?

History tells us that, East African merchants used to sail across the Indian ocean to trade spices, ivory, and gold. On their return, they would haul back various teas, textiles, and other treasures. This route eventually came to be known as the Spice Trade. During that time, the East African artisans crafted various delicious ways to enjoy a cup of Chai Moto (Hot Tea) by blending local spices and herbs such as lemongrass, vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger.

We call ourselves Chai Moto because we pay homage to the hands-on brilliance of the art of tea blending. From carefully sourcing the highest quality teas and spices, to roasting and blending them to perfection, we take inspiration from an era when the craft of brewing tea was synonymous with passion, patience, diversity, and pride.

We consider tea blending an art form, requiring creativity and discipline, as well as a deep understanding of the characteristics of teas, herbs, spices, and the customs that accompany a truly great cup. We are committed to celebrating the hard work and dedication of the brave sailors and artisans of the East African coast who took great pride in their craft. Our goal is to share our unique tea blends in ways that nurture and sustain cultural appreciation, and help forge meaningful connections with our customers.
